Prof. Aziz Sancar

Aziz Sancar DNA onarımı, hücre döngüsü kontrol noktaları ve sirkadiyen saat konularında uzmanlaşan Türk ve Amerikan vatandaşı biyokimyacı ve moleküler kimyacıdır. 2015 yılında Tomas Lindahl ve Paul L. Modrich ile birlikte Nobel Kimya Ödülü’nü kazanmıştır. Ödüle, DNA onarımı üzerine yaptıkları mekanik çalışmalarından ötürü layık görülmüşlerdir.

Sancar şu anda North Carolina Üniversitesi Tıp Okulu Biyokimya ve Biyofizik Bölümü’nde Sarah Graham Kenan Profesörü olarak görev yapmaktadır, aynı zamanda UNC Lineberger Kapsamlı Kanser Merkezi’nin bir üyesidir. Türk kültürünü tanıtan, ABD’deki Türk öğrencilere destek sağlayan ve kar amacı gütmeyen bir kurum olan Aziz ve Gwen Sancar Vakfı’nın kurucu ortaklarındandır.

Sancar ilköğretimini doğduğu yer olan Savur’un yakınlarında almıştır. Daha sonra, İstanbul Üniversitesi’nde tıp okumuş, doktorasını 1977’de koliform bakterinin fotoreaktivasyona etkisi üzerine şimdiki adı Professor Emeritus Laboratuarı olan eski adıyla Dr. C. Stan Rupert Laboratuarı’nda, Texas Üniversitesi, Dallas’ta yapmıştır. Tomas Lindahl ve Paul L. Modrich ile birlikte, DNA onarımı üzerine yaptıkları mekanik çalışmalardan ötürü 2015 Nobel Kimya Ödülü’nü kazanmıştır. 1984’te ABD Ulusal Bilim Vakfı Moleküler Biyofizik Genç Araştırmacı Ödülü’nün de sahibi olmuştur.

Harriet Fulbright

Harriet Fulbright, eşi ve Fulbright değişim programının kurucusu olan Senatör J. William Fulbright’ın vizyonunu devam ettirmeyi amaçlayan ve kar amacı gütmeyen bir kurum olan J. William & Harriet Fulbright Center’ın kurucusudur. Harriet Fulbright yaşamının çoğunu, eğitim ve sanat alanlarında çalışarak geçirmiştir. 1997 yılından 2000 yılına kadar başkan Bill Clinton döneminde, Beyaz Saray Sanat ve İnsanlık Komitesi’nde yöneticilik yaptı. Bu komisyonun amacı Amerika’daki kültürel yaşamı geliştirmek için kamu sektörü ve özel sektör arasındaki ortaklığı teşvik etmektir. Bu göreve gelmeden önce Fulbright Programının 50. Yıldönümünde “Gayrı Resmi Elçi” olarak çalıştı ve beş kıtadaki sayısız ülkeye ve Amerika’nın bütün eyaletlerine seyahat etti. Gökhan Coşkun

Gokhan Coskun an international education professional with over 15 years of experience in international leadership, management, diplomacy, cross cultural advising, and international exchange program development. He is the founder of Prof. Aziz Sancar Girls in STEM project that aims to pique girls’ curiosity in the STEM field at an early age by raising awareness of global culture and science.

In 2008, he has developed the first ever English Study Abroad Program operating at U.S. Universities campuses for Turkish University students. The program was designed with the “Learning English by Living English” philosophy at Boston University, Kent State University, Northeastern University, Northern Virginia Community College, and California State University. In 2009, he established Harriet Fulbright College and successfully directed the school’s accreditation process by CEA and received SEVIS certification through USCIS. Mr. Coskun was responsible for the opening of the first Turkish University Campus in the U.S.

Mr. Coskun attended many international meetings and conferences on education in United States, Turkey, South Korea, Germany, China, and Mongolia. With the assistance of the State Department Bureau of Educational & Cultural Affairs Department, he successfully established one of the first ever training program in the United States for Korean defectors. Mr. Coskun developed global exchange programs with: U.S State Department, American Bar Associations, Korea-U.S. Science Cooperation Center, Korea Ministry of Education, Kyungsung University, Yeoju Technology University, Mongolian University Science and Technology, Ulaanbaatar City Office, Turkish Press and Information Center, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission, Berlin Technical University, and Charles University in Prague.

He is currently working on his PHD dissertation in Economic Managerial and Social Faculty Labor Economics. He has a Masters in Economic Managerial and Social Faculty Human Resources from University of Istanbul, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Counselling Science from Karadeniz Technical University.

Casey Kim was born in Republic of Korea and she completed her early childhood there. Her first study abroad experience was in elementary school, where she traveled to NASA Camp located in Japan. Her experience of culture change persisted when she moved to New Zealand, where she was attended primary and part of secondary school. She moved to the U.S.A. to complete her secondary education and her higher education. She was accomplished at Pratt Institute, New York throughout her higher education, and continued to show great interest in the arts education throughout her life, which was displayed since she was young.

As Casey’s parents created chances to expand her understandings to view different sides of the world since she was young, she was able to experience different humanities, values and cultures as she lived in many different countries. She is currently focused on developing additional knowledge and aptitude on international background by practicing in the education field.

Rose is a GIS project team member from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree in Women’s & Gender Studies and Global Studies, as well as a minor in Spanish. For the past year, she has worked in the areas of women’s rights and education, through an internship at a domestic violence agency as well as a volunteer position teaching English as a Second Language. Rose is currently in the Republic of Georgia serving in the Peace Corps, teaching English and promoting gender equity and girls education.

Rose joined the GIS project because of her interest in girls education and gender equality, and to support her godfather Aziz Sancar’s passion for girls education in Turkey.

Lamia AKTAŞ, Eğitim Teknolojileri Uzmanı ve Bilişim Teknolojileri Öğretmeni olarak çalışmaktadır. Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi, Bilgisayar ve Öğretim Teknolojileri Eğitimi Bölümünden lisans derecesini almış olup Marmara Üniversitesi’nde Yüksek Lisans’ına devam etmektedir.Ulusal kongrelerde sunum ve ödüllerinin olmasının yanı sıra Londra’daki Uluslararası Eğitim Teknolojileri Fuarı BETT SHOW’a 2015 ve 2016 yıllarında sunucu olarak kabul almış ve çalışmalarını paylaşmıştır. En dikkat ettiği konulardan biri teknolojinin doğru içerik ve pedagojik yaklaşımla öğrenme ortamlarına katkı sağlayacak şekilde entegre edilmesidir. Bu çerçevede sürekli araştırmalar yaparak kendini geliştirmeyi seven, inovatif çalışmaların uygulanmasında öncü ve tüm canlılara karşı pozitif tutum içerisinde olmayı kendine ilke edinmiş bir eğitimcidir.

Erika Moscoso graduated from Virginia Polytechnic University, majoring in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise (HNFE), Spanish and Biological Sciences. Her future career plans are to become a Physician’s Assistant in the next few years and be an active member in healthcare. She is currently working in this field before she attends PA school to learn more about the industry and to continue to refine her professional skills.

Nicole Kim graduated from University of Mary Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She was pursuing a degree in Doctor of Dental Surgery post her undergraduate studies, so she ran for the position of president of Pre-Medical & Pre-Dental Club at her university. She became the president of Pre-Dental portion of the Club her junior year and sustained the position until the end of her senior year.

After graduation however, she is looking to make a career move to accounting and is currently working towards obtaining an Accounting Career Studies Certificate to become a Certified Public Accountant. Although she is presently exploring different fields in accounting, she hopes to find her passion in fraud examination.

Nicole enjoys interacting with children, and have been working with them for many years.
